![]() Thanks to everyone who has shown interest and encouragement in this project and a special thanks to those who have participated in the first two events that we have done - an initial meetup at OddStory brewing and the Oyster Mushroom Log Inoculation workshop on the beautiful Cumberland Plateau. So many people have reached out and I think we are going to have a very successful club where we can share camaraderie, ideas, growing tips & experiences. It occurred to me that if I was interested in this, you probably were too and boy was I right. Millions of YouTube videos watched and reddit posts read - later, I was ready to grow some Shiitake…and Oysters … and Morels…you get the picture. My wife, who is used to this kind of over saturation with esoteric minutia, was appalled to catch me listening to mushroom podcasts (they are out there), but alas that is where things had gone. Me too! (nice to see you fellow obsessives). I suspect that your interest in this club predisposes you as the type of person who goes f-ing overboard gets endearingly immersed in their passions. I knew that I had to give mushroom growing another look. These growing experiences along with some fortuitous hiking finds of Chicken of the Woods and Maitake were creating an action-item in my brain With almost no attention this block was spewing out amazing beautiful Blue Oysters. Fast forward to the early long-haired COVID days, when everyone was looking for wholesome diversions…a man can only drink so many (delicious hand crafted) cocktails and eat so much sourdough bread before his consciousness turns to other things to shove down his pie-hole… enter an Oyster Mushroom Grow Kit my son was gifted, it was amazing. Despite my unrealistic expectations, I was not soon swimming in kiddie pool of those savory fungi caps BUT we got a few and that was enough to plant a seed (spore?) in my mind. To catch you upon what got us here - several years ago a friend and I bought a bag of Shiitake dowels and inoculated some unknown tree that I cut out of an overgrown area of my yard. Clean benches can be used for certain clean activities, such as the dust-free assembly of sterile equipment or electronic devices, and they should never be used when handling cell culture materials or drug formulations, or when manipulating potentially infectious materials. If you are reading this you are in on the ground floor of mushroom revolution in Chattanooga, Congrats! That 4th grade math teacher that insisted that you were never going anywhere is eating those hurtful words now, Finally! These devices only provide product protection. Horizontal laminar flow or vertical laminar flow “clean benches” are not biosafety cabinets these pieces of equipment discharge HEPA-filtered air from the back of the cabinet across the work surface toward the user, and they may expose the user to potentially hazardous materials. Vertical flow hoods, on the other hand, provide significant protection to the user and the cell culture. ![]() The flow can be horizontal, blowing parallel to the work surface, or it can be vertical, blowing from the top of the cabinet onto the work surface.ĭepending on its design, a horizontal flow hood provides protection to the culture (if the air flowing towards the user) or to the user (if the air is drawn in through the front of the cabinet by negative air pressure inside). Laminar flow hoods protect the working environment from dust and other airborn contaminants by maintaining a constant, unidirectional flow of HEPA-filtered air over the work area.
